IAP2 Planning for Effective Public Participation

This introductory module of the iap2 Foundations in Public Participation Program provides the fundamentals for planning effective public participation. Using iap2’s planning protocol and spectrum of public participation, participants will learn how to establish clear and achievable objectives for public participation and how to plan for effective public engagements.

The iap2 Planning course is an intensive course aimed at building skills and understanding about the foundations for planning effective public participation (p2). P2 goes by many names – consultation, engagement, or public involvement, but this course is internationally recognized as providing an effective foundation for professionals across many disciplines to learn about how to plan for p2.

In this course you will learn:

  • The three Foundations for iap2
  • The planning methodology which is a five-step, 21-activity process for designing a public engagement and communications plan
  • To understand the barriers to participation and how to develop strategies to focus on safe, accessible and meaningful engagement.

In this course, participants will work in small groups and whole group and will work through a case study to apply key learnings. Independent work between sessions will focus on reading materials and participating in class forums.

If your role requires that you engage the public or stakeholders, this course is for you. You will leave more informed and well prepared for planning meaningful engagement.

This course is delivered through two mediums: 1. group Zoom webinars and 2. self-directed online learning. The online content aims to supplement learning and to provide background materials prior to the Zoom webinars. The online learning component is approximately 30 minutes before each live webinar. There are nine live webinars in total (with the technology orientation webinar).
